The Sokoke is classified with the group of shorthaired cats with a distinct pattern. This African breed, resembling the cheetah, lived prevailingly in the trees and, according to sources, ate primarily insects. Its appearance is somewhere between a wild cat and a normal, domesticated cat. It can swim and fish well. To avoid inbreeding, breeders still import new animals from Kenya. The body is of medium length, slender and well muscled. The bone structure is strong and well-developed, the chest is prominent. The wedge-shaped head has an almost flat profile, appearing small in relation to the body. The nose is of medium length, with a softly indicated stop. The chin is strong, broad and in one line with the tip of the nose. Ears are medium-sized, broad at the base, with slightly rounded tips. They are set high on the head, giving the cat a constantly alert appearance. Tufts of hair on the tips of the auricles are desirable. Eyes are large, set wide apart. They are slightly slanted towards the nose, almond-shaped, brilliant and expressive. Their colour ranges from amber to light green. The eyes are outlined noticeably. The legs are long, slender and well muscled. The hind legs are longer than the front. The position of the hind legs is very characteristic for this breed. The tail is medium long, wider at the base than at the tip. The coat is very short, close lying and glossy (but not silky). The cat has an underdeveloped undercoat, or no undercoat at all. The basic coat colour is any shade of black tabby. The black pattern resembles the tabby markings, but it also differs to a certain extent - the oval pattern on the flanks is replaced by longwise running bars. In the dark areas of the pattern, hairs with the ticking should be visible ? this effect is characteristic of the Sokoke breed. The nose leather is brick red, outlined with a darker colour, the paw pads are black or seal. FIFe recognizes only the one colour variety.
