The Abyssinian belongs to the group of shorthair cats. It is medium built, its body is of medium length, firm, lithe and muscular. The legs are long and slender, but elegant, with small oval paws. The head, placed on a graceful neck, is wedge shaped, of medium proportions, with broad forehead and soft contours. The nose is medium long, in profile it shows a soft curve. The muzzle must not be sharply pointed. A shallow indentation in profile is desirable, but a pinch is a fault. Ears are relatively large, broad at the base. At the tips they are slightly rounded, with a thumbprint. The tufts of hair at the tips are desirable. Ears are attentively pricked. Eyes are large, almond in shape, brilliant and expressive - amber, green or yellow. They are outlined with the colour of ticking. The tail is long, broad at the base and tapering to the tip. The coat is short and fine and lies close to the body. Two or three bands of colour on each hair with dark tips are preferred. The Abyssinian colouring is caused by the dominant allele P (Abyssinian). Its typical features are a darker back line and plain-coloured outer part of coat without bars; at the same time, each hair is distinctively zonally coloured, which creates a ticking effect. The result is a "rabbit-like" colour and also a drawing of coat, which is typical for Abyssinian and Somali cats. Faults precluding the certificate (title) are the Siamese type of head or round head, bars on all four legs, whip-shaped tail, lack of ticking in parts where desired, necklaces, markings on a chest and belly and a white locket.
