The Maine Coon is a huge breed with an angular head profile and big ears, with a broad chest, strong bone structure, a long, solidly muscled angular body and long wavy tail. Males have, as opposed to females, a very strong, muscular neck. The body is long, with a strong bone structure and strong chest. It is solidly muscled and creates an impression of strength. The legs are of medium length, strong and form a rectangle with the body. Paws are big and round, with tufts of hair between the toes. The tail should be at least as long as the body from shoulder blades to the root of the tail. At its base it is broad and it tapers to the tip. The fur of the tail is rich and always wavy. The head is angular, the forehead slightly domed, cheekbones are highly set and prominent. Ears are big, broad at the base slightly converging to the tips. Lynx tufts are desirable. Tufts of hair in the auricles hang over the outer rim of ears. Eyes are large, placed wide apart. They are slightly rounded, but not almond-shaped. They are widely open, appearing round. All colours of eyes are permitted. Bright eyes are desirable. All natural colours and textures are permitted, except chocolate, cinnamon, lilac and light-colour, and Siamese and Burmese dilution. Copper, gold and green eye colours are allowed for all of the colour varieties. There is no connection between eye colour and fur colour. Completely mature males usually have larger and broader heads than females - they are much more massive and are typical representatives of this beautiful natural breed. The Maine Coon matures much later than other breeds.
